Under the Hood: Cyndi Lauper on Memphis Blues
Cyndi Lauper had a string of monster hits in the eighties, showcasing her distinctive voice and personality. But she has proven to be a lot more than just a pop star. As a matter of fact, she is one of the few people out there to achieve what they call GET status, winning Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Awards. Before she wrote the score for the Broadway musical KINKY BOOTS, she put out an album of the blues. And she decided to record it in Memphis. Here’s Cyndi Lauper to tell us why.
“Everybody went through Memphis to find a record deal, to get a gig, and then they went on Highway 61 to Chicago, so these were the first rockers. This is the basis of everything I’ve ever sung in my life. And it was almost like going home or the Holy Grail or something.” - Cyndi Lauper
