Under the Hood: The Origin of “Messin’ with the Kid”

When Brother Jake and I recorded BRIEFCASE FULL OF BLUES, we included a little song called “Messin’ With The Kid.”

Irish bluesman Rory Gallagher also tried his hand at this one.

And Johnny Winter will not let anyone mess with him, as well.

This tune was written by Mel London, and first recorded by Junior Wells in 1960 as a single for Chief records. Junior and his electrified harp made the song a signature of his career, letting everyone know that he was not a kid to be messed with. Here is Junior Wells, joined by his long-time partner, Buddy Guy and “Messin’ With The Kid.”
