Under the Hood: Jerry Lee Lewis on How He Got the Nickname ‘Killer’

When Jerry Lee Lewis’s mother enrolled him in bible college, she was sure he would dedicate his musical talents to a higher calling.  But when he launched into a boogie woogie version of “My God Is Real,” the church assembly sent him on his way.  And while that might have been disrespectful and maybe even sacrilegious, it hardly explains how he got the nickname, “Killer.”

Oh it started between me and Cecil Harrison my buddy, when we was both got called down to the principals office one day, and we’d both been fighting with a teacher.  And we got expelled for two weeks apiece. And we left and we were going out the gate and Cecil said, “Well I’ll see you later, Killer.” – Jerry Lee Lewis
