Under the Hood: Happy Birthday George Harrison!

George Harrison was the Beatles’ lead guitarist, but it wasn’t until the Beatles broke up and George went solo that his fantastic slide guitar work became his signature sound.  As a style, the electric slide guitar is most identified with the great Elmore James, who turned Robert Johnson’s “I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom” into one of the most enduring blues and rock guitar riffs.

George Harrison certainly had Elmore James on his mind when he wrote a song for the Beatles called “For You Blue,” which featured a prominent slide guitar part.  When they recorded it in 1969, it was John Lennon playing the slide, but listen for George shouting out during the solo that John was doing Elmore proud.  Here are the Beatles and “For You Blue.”
