Under the Hood: Charles Brown on “Merry Christmas Baby”

Christmas is a time of joy for us all, and I can think of no better way to celebrate than with a cozy fire, a tasty adult beverage, and some blues on the radio. Piano master Charles Brown – forever associated with the classic, “Merry Christmas Baby” – remembers how he first got a hold of the tune.

Lou Baxter gave me this satchel. So I took the satchel home, and I looked at all the songs. He had a lot of songs in there. And I saw “Merry Christmas Blues,” and it just struck me. And I said you know, it’s not no “Merry Christmas Blues,” it should be “Merry Christmas Baby.” – Charles Brown
