Under the Hood: Blue Monday “The Right Time” by Nappy Brown

The song “Night Time is the Right Time” was a huge hit for Ray Charles, and became a standard part of his repertoire. The song was also recorded by Credence Clearwater Revival, Ruth Brown, Rufus and Carla Thomas, the Animals, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and more…

The tune came originally from Nappy Brown.  In the nineteen fifties Brown was one of the biggest stars of a new style of music called rhythm and blues.  He first recorded the version that caught Ray Charles’ ear, back in 1957.  His recording borrowed from songs by Roosevelt Sykes and Big Bill Broonzy, but today Nappy Brown is regarded as the official author of the blues classic, “The Right Time.”
