THIS WEEKEND: Lonnie Brooks Retrospective

Hour 1 Lonnie Brooks Retrospective:

Chicago blues great Lonnie Brooks passed away, aged 83, on April 1, 2017. Elwood pays tribute, beginning with Lonnie’s appearance with him (and Junior Wells) in BLUES BROTHERS 2000. Some excellent audio clips of Lonnie Brooks from the Bluesmobile interview archive will be played, along with reminiscences from his talented sons, Ronnie Baker Brooks, and Wayne Baker Brooks. And, of course, Lonnie’s music will air, running the gamut from Chicago blues, Louisiana swamp blues, and Texas blues. Plus performances with his sons, and some Sam Cooke to round things out. Elwood closes out the show with new music from the charismatic and unique bluesman Jake La Botz.

Hour 2 Mother’s Day with C.C. Rider:

C.C. Rider brings us the female perspective for this Mother’s Day edition of the program. Present-day queens of the blues will be played: Bonnie Raitt, Mavis Staples, Shemekia Copeland… Plus the women who gave us the blues in the first place: Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie, Big Mama Thornton…. C.C. winds up with some blues women of tomorrow, Rhiannon Giddens, Valerie June, and Beth Hart.
