THIS WEEKEND: John Nemeth
Hour 1: John Nemeth
John Nemeth talks about music in Memphis, where he has made his home, and North Mississippi, where he made his latest record, FEELIN’ FREAKY. Along the way, a listen is given to some other great soul harmonica players, Stevie Wonder, Syl Johnson, Curtis Salgado, and Sugar Blue. Nemeth recorded his release at Zebra Ranch, the great Jim Dickinson’s old studio, and it was produced by Jim’s son, Luther. We’ll hear a track from Luther Dickinson as well, plus a new cut from Memphis soul legend Don Bryant. Wrapping things up, from the soundtrack to a graphic novel, MURDER BALLADS, a new version of “In the Pines” will be played, by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, joined by old school bluesman Robert Finley.
Hour 2: Harmonica Masters
Elwood pays homage to his instrument of choice, the harmonica. From current masters like Charlie Musselwhite, James Cotton, and Kim Wilson, to the guys who took it from the cotton fields to the clubs in Chicago, Sonny Boy Williamson 1, Sonny Terry, and Little Walter, and on to some of the men who made the harmonica electric, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Paul Butterfield, and John Mayall.
