THIS WEEKEND: Blues on TV!

Hour 1: Blues on TV

Blues is not just for juke joints any more. It has been mainstreamed, as they say. Elwood gives a listen to blues on television. In commercials: for beer (George Thorogood), body spray (Johnny “Guitar” Watson), and even sex pills (Howlin’ Wolf). And also as themes for shows, from THE WIRE to THE WONDER YEARS, with Joe Cocker, Gangstagrass, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Fantastic Negrito, Keb’ Mo’, and John Boutté. Then Elwood turns off the set, and closes things out with new music from San Francisco retro band, Royal Jelly Jive.

Hour 2: Shemekia Copeland

The newly crowned queen of the blues, Shemekia Copeland joins Elwood to tout her new release OUTSKIRTS OF LOVE, which does its part to keep the blues not only alive but rocking and contemporary. Also some ZZ Top for you, and a generous diva sampler of Aretha Franklin, Annie Lennox, and Tina Turner.40362-outskirts-of-love
