THIS WEEKEND: 45 Years of Alligator Records
Hour 1: Alligator Records 45th Anniversary
Alligator Records releases its 45th Anniversary Collection. Founder Bruce Iglauer joins Elwood to talk about the secrets of Alligator’s success. It’s the back catalog, for one thing. Elwood gives you some Koko Tayor, Hound Dog Taylor, Son Seals, James Cotton, Elvin Bishop, and Luther Allison. The steady interest in legendary blues artists makes it possible for Alligator to create new ones, like Toronzo Cannon, Shemekia Copeland, and JJ Grey. All are represented on the 2-CD anniversary collection. Besides spinning some classic blues, Elwood also brings you the great young harp player Aki Kumar whose new release combines American blues and Indian Bollywood music. It rocks.

Hour 2: Roots of Rock
When a song is great, people want to hear it. And musicians want to play it. And then what happens? The song changes. The Blues Brothers tackle Sam and Dave’s “Soul Man.” Cream goes after Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads.” We will hear what happens when Led Zeppelin meets Muddy Waters, the Stones meet Slim Harpo, and Jack White gets all over Little Willie John. And more! The roots of rock and soul.
