Southern Avenue: Blues Breaker

Southern Avenue is a Memphis Street that runs from the east part of town to Soulsville, the original home of Stax Records, which is the label of choice for the modern soul band called Southern Avenue.  What goes around comes around.  Fronted by a charismatic female singer and an Israeli guitar player, the band focuses on absorbing the history of gospel, soul, jazz and blues, and mixing it up in that time-honored Memphis stew.  The singer’s sister plays the drums, and they are joined by a jazz-inspired bassist, and a keyboard playing alumnus of the Stax Musical Academy.  These five want more than hits.  They want a musical legacy.  Not too much to ask.  They are joined in their first release by guest stars like Luther Dickinson and trumpet player Marc Franklin from the Bo-Keys.  But here they are on their own in a catch number that ought to get you tapping in all your extremities.  SOUTHERN AVENUE.  “Don’t Give Up.”
