Happy Birthday Rick Derringer!

Guitarist Rick Derringer first made his mark in rock and roll in 1965, when his band, The McCoys, hit number one with their song “Hang On Sloopy”.  Rick went on to lend his distinctive talent to Johnny and Edgar Winter, Steely Dan, Alice Cooper, and even Cyndi Lauper.  Derringer scored his biggest hit with the song “Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo”, which first appeared on a Johnny Winter album.

I wrote it when I first started working with Johnny Winter, and I really wanted to incorporate the Bluesy image that he had with the more traditional English mixed with American Rock sound. So in order to do that I kinda had to come up with a language that Johnny spoke in, and just trying to do that came the idea for “Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo.” And uh, what the hell is that? – Rick Derringer
