Elwood’s Blues Breaker: Saun & Starr “Hot Shot”
Saundra Williams and Starr Duncan Lowe grew up in the Bronx just blocks from each other, but didn’t meet until an open mic night in Harlem. Struck by each others’ talent, they became fast friends. Then, by another odd chain of circumstance, they both wound up auditioning, unbeknownst to each other, to be singers with Miss Sharon Jones. The three way chemistry was immediate. They gigged. Then Miss Jones took off with the Dap-Kings, at which point Saun and Starr were asked to be Sharon’s backup singers. Soon, the two singers began doing an opening set on their own. And now… an album all their own. As Saun & Starr. Elwood’s Blues Breaker this week is Saun & Starr’s song “Hot Shot.”
